Marta Nabais is an IBCLC® (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant), doula, and babywearing consultant. I am the mother of two breastfed children, but it was with my firstborn that I faced the greatest challenge of my motherhood journey. Breastfeeding—so often described as something that comes naturally—was anything but natural for me. It was during that time that I first experienced the weight of inequality and the lack of support that so many women face when they become mothers. It was through mothers' support groups that I found the help I needed to overcome those challenges and discover my path. Inspired by that experience, I decided to change direction: I left a job that no longer fulfilled me and trained as a doula, lactation consultant, and babywearing educator. In 2016, I founded OvO, a community-based maternal support project in Almada, on the south bank of the Tagus River. OvO has since grown and is now based at Ninho. The experience I gained and the lessons I learned through this project are what allow me to support other families today.
